CBD and Sleep: Will CBD help me sleep?

A good night’s sleep is essential for human health. Sleep helps with memory formation, growing and repairing muscle tissue and even preventing disease. However, it’s estimated that as many as 70% of Americans don’t get enough sleep.

With so many experiencing chronic sleeplessness, CBD has become a popular natural remedy. While more longitudinal research is necessary to fully understand the effects of CBD on the sleep/wake cycle, preliminary research has indicated that CBD may be beneficial for those struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep or experiencing anxiety- or pain-induced insomnia.

Recall from our previous blog post that the endocannabinoid system plays an essential role in maintaining bodily functions such as homeostasis, mood, appetite and sleep. CBD is a type of phytocannabinoid that interacts with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, influencing this sleep/wake cycle.

Some studies indicate CBD has a positive effect on sleep disorders because of its interaction with our body’s natural sleep/wake cycle. However, not everyone experiences the same benefits and different doses might lead to different effects. For example, research suggests that low doses of CBD have a stimulating effect while high doses have a sedating effect. Additional longitudinal research is necessary to determine the proper dosing and to advance our understanding of how CBD affects the sleep/wake cycle.

CBD for anxiety- and pain-induced insomnia

Because CBD has been shown to decrease inflammation and reduce chronic pain, individuals commonly use CBD products to naturally alleviate chronic aches and pains. Additionally, some people who use CBD for chronic pain report sleeping better, but it’s unclear whether these individuals slept better because their pain was alleviated or because CBD directly affected their sleep. Nonetheless, it suggests CBD may help alleviate pain-induced insomnia.

Individuals experiencing chronic anxiety also report a better night’s sleep when using CBD. While anxiety in and of itself isn’t a sleep disorder, chronic anxiety can certainly contribute to sleep disturbances and result in chronic sleeplessness. Because CBD helps to relax the nervous system, research indicates CBD may be beneficial for those with anxiety-related disorders who are experiencing chronic sleep disturbances. One study demonstrates that 80% of participants who used CBD for anxiety reported lower levels of anxiety within a month while sleep patterns improved in more than 65% of those participants.

CBD for sleep disorders

Preliminary research suggests that CBD may have a therapeutic potential for the treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness. Research indicates CBD may be helpful for those suffering from insomnia, or difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. Insomniacs commonly report suffering from anxiety about not getting enough adequate sleep, which can further increase one’s sleeplessness. Since CBD has potential therapeutic benefits to treat anxiety-related disorders, it’s speculated that CBD may reduce anxiety associated with insomnia.

CBD may be helpful for those with excessive daytime sleepiness, in which an individual struggles to stay awake during the typical daytime hours. Preliminary studies suggest that low doses of CBD function as a wake-inducing drug. However, other studies suggest that high doses of CBD have a sedative effect, so further research is necessary to determine the proper doses and methods to affect wakefulness and sleepiness.
